FAQs about Our Services

What services do you provide?

We provide ‘at your location’ active child care services for local and visiting families of the Outer Banks.  While often referred to as “sitters” our providers do anything but sit!  They will actively engage with your children while in our care.

What ages of children do you care for? Do you care for infants?

We provide services for infants through teen-aged children. All of our care providers have extensive toddler and school-age childcare experience; some also have extensive infant care experience. When you make your reservation please let us know that you would like someone with infant care experience so that we can find just the right sitter for you!

Do your services come to us at our beach home?

We provide services at your location on the Outer Banks from Corolla to Manteo. Our sitters will come to your home, hotel, or rental property.

Will your providers watch my children on the beach?

Our providers are happy to spend time on the beach with your children while playing in the sand, flying kites, walking at the edge of the surf, however please remember our providers are not Ocean Rescue certified.  Your children’s safety is our first concern.

We will allow your children to swim in the ocean while under the care of our providers ONLY if ALL of the following conditions are met:

1.  The child/children must be in the direct vicinity of an Ocean Rescue/Lifeguard stand.

2. The childcare provider is responsible for watching 3 or less children while in the ocean.

3.  The child/children must be over the age of 10 and be a strong swimmer(s).

If you intend for your 10 + year old children to swim in the ocean, a waiver will need to be signed when the provider arrives on site, BEFORE care commences and the parent leaves the premises or the provider will not allow the children in the ocean.

**Personal Note: The Outer Banks is famous for unforgiving riptides and dangerous swimming conditions.  I believe that only parents truly know their children and have the ability to gauge what they are capable of.  You know their personalities, energy levels and if they are the type to follow rules or push boundaries.  As a parent of this community with a daily awareness of our intense surf, you can not be too safe.   If it were me, I would not allow my 5 & 7 year olds to swim in the ocean during my absence. However, if there were a provider onsite and my 12 year old and his older cousins and friends wanted to play int he ocean within the vicinity of a lifeguard stand, then I would feel comfortable with a provider watching as back-up. Again, all situations are different.  My main priority is ensuring the safety of your children and my providers.  We can work as a team to assess what’s best for you and your children during your absence.

Can our children swim in the pool while we are away?

Absolutely!  We allow our providers to swim in the pool with your children should you permit us to do so.  Children who can not swim are required to wear swimsuits with built-in floatation devices. All of our providers can swim and are CPR certified.  During the reservation process we will discern pertinent info about the children and their swimming abilities.  Again, their safety is our first concern.

What areas do you serve?

Corolla, Sanderling, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Collington, Nags Head and Manteo.  Carova availability limited. Please call for pricing in alternate areas.

Do you provide group services for weddings, conferences and private parties? If so, How many children per care provider?

Yes!  The number of children per child care provider varies depending on the ages of the children but typically up to 4 children per provider. The location of the event and the requested activities also plays a  role in determining the appropriate child/provider ratio.   If you would like to discuss how we might help out at your function, please complete a request form from the reservation tab above or email Maria at info@obxislandchildcare.com.

What activities will the providers do with my kids?

They come armed with a bag of toys, arts and crafts to entertain your children.  Our providers will also be happy to play outside with your children, take them for walks on the beach, bike riding, swimming and many other activities with your approval.  Movies and TV will be played only by your request.  Our providers are not allowed to drive with your children unless approved under special condition in advance.
